Background

Amoeba Design was my own design/development freelance undertaking. My objective was to offer high-quality affordable graphic/web design and development to local Denver businesses. Creating a business from scratch was a lot of fun, and I learned a lot about business, marketing, and customer relations from working with the various customers I acquired. I also grew as a designer and developer from needing to be completely self-reliant.

Roles and Responsibilities

  • Me (Owner, UX/UI Designer, Frontend Developer)

The Challenge

The challenge was to start my own web/graphic design freelance company from scratch. I was solely responsible for all design, development, marketing, advertising, and business functions. I knew this was going to be a huge learning experience while also pushing the limits of my skills.

Hurdles

  • It was my first time starting a business, so I needed a little extra time to learn the ropes. Luckily, I had plenty of resources to educate myself.
  • The web design/development competition in Denver Colorado was intensely high.
  • Starting without any customer leads meant getting customers was slow at first.

Opportunities

  • Launching my own business opened the door to new learning experiences.
  • Competing against well-established local companies pushed me to raise the level of my skills and to learn new ones.
  • Being the “new kid” on the scene allowed me to under bid the larger more established competitors, while offering the same quality work.

Target Audience

  • Local Denver metro businesses
  • No particular business types or sizes

Final Thoughts

Amoeba Design ended up with branding that was on-point with its target audience. Professional marketing materials that confidently represented the company and a clean yet creative and effective website resulted in it not take long before Amoeba was building up an impressive customer base.
